The Galapagos were born from volcanoes erupting violently out of the sea and make up an archipelago that is part of Ecuador. Plant and animal species traversed 1000km of ocean to colonize the islands, leaving species isolated and evolving independently on different islands.
The Galapagos islands were made famous by Charles Darwin's studies that led to his theory of evolution by natural selection and have become a popular destination for cruisers who are curious about the unique wildlife. The Galapagos Islands are home to a number of animal species, including the Galapagos tortoise, sea lions, the Blue-footed Booby, the Marine iguana, the Galapagos Penguin and Darwin's finches.
